The Cinema Club at the Avalon Theater, DC

Formerly known as the Key Sunday Cinema Club, The Cinema Club is the nation’s premier sneak preview film society. On select Sunday mornings, The Cinema Club previews and discusses the best new American independent and foreign films of the season. The movies — always kept secret until the day of the screening — are shown before their DC-area release, letting members view and respond to them with true surprise and spontaneity.

After each screening, distinguished moderator David Sterritt leads a forty-five minute discussion with club members right in the Avalon’s large theater. At many of the showings, David is joined in discussion by fellow film scholars, esteemed film critics and occasionally even the filmmakers themselves.

The Cinema Club’s distinguished group of programmers, led by Avalon Theatre Program Director Andrew Mencher, have been guiding film societies, art-theaters, academic programs and even popular film festivals for over a decade. They attend dozens of leading festivals around the globe, always keeping their eyes open for the next Cinema Club gem.Logo2
